The Atlantic Telegraph, text by W.H.Russell and illustrations by Robert Dudley. The book was published by Day & Sons in 1866. This is the large paper, deluxe version.
Robert Dudley was appointed in 1865 to record illustrations related to the laying of this hugely significant cable. He had previous associations with Day & Son, chromolithographers. W.H. Russell was the Times' war correspondent and was chosen to write the text. Originally there were 65 watercolours produced now in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and 25 were chosen for the book. The hand-coloured lithographs show each stage of the process. They are both detailed and wonderfully coloured.
The cover is spectacular. It is the original purple and green cloth with gilt-stamped designs. The spine is gilt lettering with some fading of the gilt. The cover also shows some wear but is in remarkably good condition nonetheless. The text-block edges are gilt.
There is some cracking in the gutters but the binding is holding well. There is some foxing to the preliminary pages and some light, scattered foxing throughout the book. The illustrations are tipped-in, hand-coloured lithographs. There are 25 (each with their tissue paper guard) in the body of the book and one as the title page. There is some foxing around the edges as shown in the photos however, they are quite clean otherwise. There is a very occasional small tear on the edge of some pages.
The book is a large, folio sized. It is 425x300x30mms and weighs 3.5kgs unpacked. For postage purposes it will weigh considerably more due to its size and packing requirements (about 9kgs).
I can provide more photos if required. iIwill. cover insurance for postage.
