The Art of Illuminating as Practised in Europe from the Earliest Times by W.R.Tymms and text by MD.Wyatt. A second edition from 1866 published by Day and Son.
This has a brown embossed cloth cover with bright gilt lettering. There is slight scuffing only on the cover. The spine shows more faded gilt. There is a small strip of professionally applied tape to the front and rear paste-down. There is a name-plate of John Cotton dated 1872 on the free-front page. There is some light foxing on the blanks with numerous clean vivid chromolithigraph illustrations. The binding is tight.
The book surveys manuscript embellishment from the 6th to the 16th centuries and its main feature is its wonderful illustrations. A very good copy.
