Te Ika A Maui or New Zealand and its Inhabitants by the Rev. Richard Taylor. A second edition published by William Macintosh, Paternoster Row and H. Ireson Jones from Wanganui, N.Z. in 1870.

 

The cover is the original reddish-brown cloth and it is faded and worn with soiling.The spine has gilt lettering on it. There are some cracks on the front gutter but the binding is holding. There are some scattered marks and foxing,browning and rare pencil marks.  The coloured frontspiece is loose on one corner. There are numerous black and white engravings and another coloured plate on page 602

 

The title refers to the North Island of New Zealand and literally translates as "the Fish of Maui".  The book looks at the origin, manners,customs, mythology, religion, rites songs and language of the inhabitants along with the geology natural history productions and climate. The illustrations are very. nice.  A good copy.
