1896, The Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope, illustrated by Beardsley, first edition. First state.

Beardsley's drawings were designed to complement Pope's satirical piece. His drawing style seemed ideal in the context of the poem's comments on high society.

This was published by Leonard Smithers. It is a  hard-cover with nine drawings by Aubrey Beardsley. There is a blue cover with wonderful gilt illustration. There is gilt lettering to the spine. The cover shows slight wear. The pages are rough cut and tissue paper (with slight foxing) is present over the frontispiece illustration. There is some browning of the end-papers and some minimal foxing throughout. The illustrations are clean and  thebinding tight. A very good copy overall.
