Rambles and Recollections of an Indian Officer by Lieut.-Col. W.H.Sleeman. This was published as 2 vols. by J.Hatchard and Son,  as a first edition in 1844.

The  covers are  half red leather and brown cloth with some gilt edging. The spine has gilt lettering and decorations. Volume 1 shows some wear with some losses (see photo) of the leather. There are some splits on the top of the spine edges, with the usual wear top and bottom of the spine. Volume 2 shows less wear and one small split at the top on the edge. Internally both have what may be replaced marbled end-papers. The bindings are firm. The text block edges show some faded marbling. Both have a previous owner's name in ink on the first blank page. In Volume 1, the tissue paper is retained over the fronts-piece but half detached. The middle section of the title page has a tear at its attachment but the page is held firm. Some of the blank pages show foxing and while the chromolithographs are bright there is some scattered foxing on the blank areas. The pages otherwise are very clean. Not all illustrations retain their original tissue paper and where they do the tissue paper as is usual are quite browned. Volume 2 is similar.

This is a fascinating memoir by Sleeman. He describes his work in India in the mid-nineteenth century. he had to deal with crime, working with Indian officials and others and their unique social behavoiurs and customs.

Both volumes are complete and good to very good.
