Perfection by Jose Maria de Eca De Queiroz. This is translated from the Portuguese by Charles Marriott. It is illustrated and signed by John Austen. It is number 99 of a limited edition of 250 copies on hand-made paper. It was published by Selwyn and Blount in 1923.
It has gray boards which are slightly soiled. The spine has a transverse and vertical crack, 3cms on it (seen with other copies) and a loss at the top about 1cm square. There is browning on the rear paste-down. The pages are rough cut with browning on the edges. The pages and illustrations are otherwise quite clean with a tight binding. The black and gold illustrations are delightful.
This is a short story originally written in Portuguese. John Austen's illustrations are in black and gold and perhaps inspired by Aubrey Beardsley.
Overall very good.
