Parables and Tales by Thomas Gordon Hake.

The illustrations are by Arthur Hughes and the cover by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This was published by Chapman and Hall as a first edition in 1872. In the first year of publication there were two versions which were the same other than the cover. This far more ornate version is much rarer and much desired.

The green, cloth cover with rich gilding is illustrated with gilded lettering on the spine. The cover illustration is truly delightful. There is some occasional slight bubbling of the cloth slightly more obvious on the back. There is some light edge wear to the covers.

The text-block edges are also gilt. There is some slight staining visible on the bottom of the pages up to page 15 and visible in photos 3 and 5. This is also apparent on the rear end-papers. There are advertisements at the back. The pages and illustrations are otherwise very clean. The binding is tight.

The poems are by Thomas Gordon Hake. The black and white engravings are by the Dalziel brothers from illustrations by Hughes of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

This is a very good copy with a very desired cover.
