  Published by John Murray in 1857. Advertisements at the back, dated November, 1857 place this copy as a first edition, second issue.
  The book has brown embossed covers. There is gilt lettering on the spine. There are cracks along the joints as seems common with these editions.The edges of the covers  show some wear and bumped corners. there is a previous book-shops label on the front paste-down. There is a previous owner's gift inscription, dated 1860, on an early blank page. The book shows some very light browning and occasional foxing. There is a book-binder's label (Remnant & Edmonds) on the rear paste-down.
  The fronts-piece is a fold-out map and all maps and illustrations are present including the one in the rear pocket.
  This is an important historical record in original and complete good plus condition
