In Darkest Africa or the Quest,Rescue, and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatoria by Henry M. Stanley.

This was published by Scribner & Sons in 1890. There are two hard-cover books with a half-leather binding and marbled boards. There are gilt decorations and lettering on the spine with some wear. there is wear to the edges of the boards. The page edges are all gilt. Volume 1 has a map in a pocket at the back (one side of the  pocket has a tear in it) and volume 2 has one map rather than the original two (one side of the pocket has a tear in it).

There is a previous owner's name on an early blank in both books. Other than some light browning the books are quite clean with a tight binding. These are heavy books.

This account by Stanley sold 150,000 copies in the first year of publication and was translated into multiple languages.
