Illustrations to Goethe's Faust designed by Paul Konewka,1871.
Published by the Roberts Brothers in 1871.
A burgundy, pebbled cloth cover with bright gilt lettering and illustration on the front and spine. Some wear to the edges of the covers and spine. A small loss to the bottom of the free-front page (25x5mms) and some slight foxing only scattered through the book. The foxing is more obvious on the title page. The binding is tight.
There is a gift inscription in a note, dated 1870, inserted in the front of the book. Books were often released the year before their printed publication date.
This is a 19th-century collection of silhouette artworks. There are 18 delicate black-and-white silhouette plates interpreting Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's play, combined with text from Bayard Taylor’s English translation.
A very good copy.
