Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling from Pearson's Magazine, 1896.
This is the complete excerpts from the serialised version which preceded the actual book, The illustrations are by Fred Jane.
Person's magazine had all ten chapters of the book with illustrations in magazine form. A number of copies were created by extracting the chapters from the magazines and binding them. That was the case here. The binding is likely to be contemporary.
The binding is quite worn. It was originally half leather with purplish cloth. the leather is dry and flakey and worn. The cloth is faded, stained and worn. The binding itself is quite firm. The pages have scattered foxing with all the illustrations complete.
The story is, of course, a classic. It is still quite uncommon to see the complete serialised version which preceded the publication of the book albeit in a rather worn version.
