An Introduction to Music by Anne Gunn, 1820

In which the Elementary Parts of the Science, and the Principles of Thorough Bass and Modulation, as Illustrated by the Musical Games and Apparatus, are Fully and Familiarly Explained, with Copious Examples

This is the second edition, the first having been published by Muir, Wood in 1803. It does not have the accompanying wooden learning props/games.

The book is important on several levels. In particular, the significance of its publication and it's provenance. Anne  Gunn (Young) had been a music teacher and it was relatively unusual at that time for a woman to publish a book on music theory, least of all with an accompanying game to assist in learning. One of the last references about her was that she was placed in an asylum and died prior to the publication of this edition. The book contains a name-plate on the front paste-down of "the Reverend J. Hooper, Albury Rectory" who was in that capacity in the mid-nineteenth century in Surrey. Then on an early blank page in the book is the inscription "Annie Wilkinson, Cote d'Or, 1884". Annie Wilkinson was married that year to Alfred Wilkinson at Pokolbin, New South Wales, Australia. They lived at Cote d'Or and Alfred was the founder of an important early vineyard in the Hunter Valley. I obtained the book from the estate of Professor Roger Covell an important musicologist, author and critic in New South Wales in 2020. So the book has gone from a Reverend in Surrey to the wife of an important wine-making person to an academic to myself with no doubt others in between.

The cover is full calf's leather with gilt borders. The spine which has probably been reattached has gilt bands and a gilt title. The edges are bumped. The cover shows some soiling and wear. the gilt overall shows some wear. The front and rear gutters have some tape on them. The pages and text-block edges show browning, most apparent on the pages with music on them and the adjacent pages. The spine is firm.
