1847, The Parables of Our Lord, Illustrated by Noel Humphreys
This is the original papier mache version with a binding made by J &J Leighton and Sons in a mediaeval style of decoration. Then book has 31 chromolithographs. The parables are surrounded by these spectacular colour embellishments. These bindings which were made to imitate wood were quite fragile and this one is complete.
The spine has been rebacked with the original spine. The covers have some cracks with some very small losses but is complete and in very good plus condition. The spine has some transverse cracks on it as well.
The front paste-down has a ticket on it reading "Folthorp, Royal Library, Brighton". The end-papers may not be original but they are spectacular and appropiate. There is a separate loose sheet from Longman's Publishing company referencing "the Parables" and other books published by them. There is some slight scattered foxing more obvious on the blank page. The chromolithographs remain bright and vivid.
A superb example of this book.
